New Director Appointed

GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS, Jul 09, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) –Tethys Petroleum Limited (“Tethys” or “the Company”) (TSX: TPL)(LSE: TPL) is pleased to announce the appointment of Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad to the Board of Directors of Tethys Petroleum Limited.

The appointment of the new director is subject to acceptance by the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Ambassador Khalilzad will also chair a new Strategic Risk Committee of the Board.

Brief Biography:

Ambassador Khalilzad is President of a Washington, D.C. based firm focused on the Middle East and Central Asia. From 2007 to 2009, Ambassador Khalilzad served as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Prior to that, he served as United States Ambassador to Iraq (2005-2007) and United States Ambassador to Afghanistan (2003 to 2005). He also served as United States Special Presidential Envoy to Afghanistan (2001 to 2003).

Ambassador Khalilzad sits on the boards of the National Endowment for Democracy, America Abroad Media, the Center for the National Interest, the Atlantic Council, the RAND Corporation’s Middle East Studies Center, the American University of Iraq in Suleymania, and the American University of Afghanistan. He is also a counselor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

He maintains close ties with high-level leadership throughout the Middle East and Central Asia, and is regularly called upon to provide strategic advice to numerous heads of state. He appears frequently on US and foreign media outlets to share his foreign policy expertise.

Ambassador Khalilzad earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the American University of Beirut, as well as a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

Tethys is focused on oil and gas exploration and production activities in Central Asia with activities currently in the Republics of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. This highly prolific oil and gas area is rapidly developing and Tethys believes that significant potential exists in both exploration and in discovered deposits.
